Charles Richard Young had received a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and the
Purple Heart prior to his death. He was the first staff member from Record newspaper to be killed in action.
 

The article also tells of an event while he was going to France for the D-Day invasion. Captain Young’s LST was blown up by a shell and he was rescued with a full backpack in 40 feet of water.
